The Right Accessories to Stretch Your Wardrobe
I’m someone who prides myself on having a small wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of days when I feel like I have nothing to wear, but the idea of filling my closet with more stuff doesn’t really give me much peace of mind anymore. These days, I try to buy things that I really like and can see myself wearing a lot, which is definitely easier said than done. And I’m waaay more willing to wait for the right piece instead of rushing off to Zara to temporarily fill a gap. Part of what has made this shift in mindset so much easier is having more styling options by way of accessories. I’m now a big fan of the simple t-shirt and jeans combo with interesting details added here and there to change things up a bit. Having a working capsule wardrobe also means having those tried and true finishing touches to pull it all together. Today I’m sharing my roundup of the best accessories to make that capsule wardrobe work for you!
The Right Bag for the Job
As you may have gathered, I’m a big believer in a staple bag that goes with everything. Check out my top choice here. And once you have found the one that gets you through it all, it might be fun to add in something a little bit different to switch it up now and then. This season, I added a round woven basket bag to my small collection and it has been so fun to style. It’s simple and classic enough that I’m not worried about getting tired of it after a season. It’s also different enough that I feel like it just gave me about 5x more styling options in my modest wardrobe.
The Added Sparkle
I don’t really think there is any one style or item of jewelry that everyone needs to have but I do think it’s important to know what you like. I’ve talked a lot about my favorite jewelry here (and here) on the blog, and how it took a while to figure out what my style is. Much like the rest of my wardrobe I prefer pretty minimal pieces. I like that you can layer these pieces without them competing with each other and it adds another level of thought and detail to an outfit. One of my favorite outfits is a crisp white button down with a gold pendant necklace peaking out. It’s so understated and chic and makes a wardrobe staple feel more elevated.
Walk the Walk
Shoes can be a really tricky category for people with small wardrobes because it can so easily get out of hand. Before you know it, you have five pairs of beat up brown sandals and no basic black flats. There are a few styles that I think every wardrobe can use: a basic sandal in a neutral shade, a great pair of flats (ballet or loafer, it’s up to you), a pair of sneakers (I love white leather ones), a black boot (with a walkable heel or a flat Chelsea style), and a versatile heel. The rest is gravy. With these staple shoes, every t-shirt and jeans combo can take on a new style, can cover any form of weather and any activity that life has to throw at you.
