What is a Style Uniform?

Simply put, a style uniform is a combination of clothing items and accessories that make you feel most like yourself. If you have a go-to outfit combination that you reach for when you don’t know what to wear, then consider that your uniform. And if you feel a definitive lack of direction when it comes to your wardrobe, then you would probably really benefit from one.

Personally, I’m a jeans and t-shirt type of girl through and through, but the uniform doesn’t end there. The accessories are another major part of your uniform, and really what differentiates your look from everyone else’s.

It’s the inimitable details that make it uniquely yours and instantly recognizable.

How Your Personal Style Comes Into Play

In my opinion, the markers of great personal style lie in the ability to be true to yourself and your tastes. That’s why you may wonder at someone’s ability to pull off an outfit that you would never dream of wearing. Or on the flip side, as I find with so many stylish women I admire, that they can make something so simple look so so good! That’s the power of doing your thing and doing it well.

Many of us can pinpoint an overarching style that we feel most drawn to, be it a classic, minimal, edgy, boho, feminine or preppy. Once you have a general idea of your style you can use that as your jumping off point. I consider my style a mix of Classic and Minimalist but I also love more vintage-inspired statement pieces. Using classic pieces as my base, I can mix and match other elements so that I still feel like me, even when I’m wearing a vinyl trenchcoat.

Personal style is absolutely not about conforming to fit into one of those categories. Don’t worry if you’re still unsure about your own. It’s something that continues to evolve and develop as time goes on and you become more attuned to it.

Building A Wardrobe Of Good Basics

I’ve spoken about this before as it’s an important step in creating a functional capsule wardrobe. Once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll find that all of your other clothes as are much easier to style and everything will work together better. Focus on the basics that make up your personal uniform and don’t be afraid to invest more in these pieces when it makes sense to.

I used to hate shopping for basics because I thought they were boring. Now, a plain t-shirt is my favorite pieces to shop for because it’s a fun challenge to find the perfect fit, material and price point. My most recent discovery is this Universal Tee by Orejas, a sustainable LA-based brand. It’s a hemp and cotton blend that feels super soft. It has the perfect oversized crew neck fit, room in the shoulders and longer sleeves - my ideal cut.
