November Playlist

This month’s playlist consists of some fun dancey tunes that perfectly reflect the warm, summery climate here in South Africa. It’s also a throwback playlist of sorts, featuring some older favorites from the likes of Romare, Mt. Kimbie and Panama that I’ve not listened to in quite a few years. In fact I had to include the track Always by Panama (Classixx remix) to this playlist after hearing it again at a silent disco on the beach. The DJ introduced it as one of his favorites ever and it was the perfect soundtrack to dancing on the beach in the sunset.

Don’t you just love when people share the music closest to their hearts?

Then there are some new-to-me artists who I’ve not stopped listening to lately: NEIL FRANCES, a two piece alt-pop group that reminds me a bit of Foxygen, and HNNY, a Swedish ambient and deep house producer. HNNY’s track Montara reimagines jazz musician Bobby Hutcherson’s iconic track by the same name. That track was constantly played on the Atlanta jazz radio station that I listened to growing up so it gives me all the nostalgic feels. But my favorite HNNY track is Sunday, which samples I Met Him On A Sunday by 50’s doo-wop group The Shirelles, better known for their famous track Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. I love the silly bluntness of the lyrics that feel so sweetly nostalgic and even a bit creepy when slowed down. I can’t believe I have a Swedish DJ to thank for introducing me to the little piece of African American pop history that is The Shirelles but well, here we are.

I’d love to hear which tracks you’re loving at the moment. Any new artists you’re excited about? Let me know in the comments! And if you’re looking for more, check out my other monthly playlists on Spotify.
