Bedroom Refresh: How I Styled My Dresser

Over the past several months I’ve been making some changes around the apartment and my bedroom dresser is something I’ve wanted to tackle for a looong time. Having such a small room the dresser really is a focal point of the space and something I look at way more than say, the bed. These little styling changes have made all the difference in our bedroom and now I feel so pleased with myself every time I lay eyes on this lovely corner. So today I wanted to share the simple and budget friendly tips I used to give my bedroom a little refresh.

Invest within your means…

I really love this Ikea Malm dresser for our room because it’s practical and minimal. And yes, I know literally everyone has this dresser but it’s popular for a reason, and I (not so) secretly love Ikea anyways so I thought it was the perfect fit for our lifestyle and budget. I have become comfortable with buying furniture for our apartment knowing full well that I may want to switch it out down the road for something a bit nicer and that took some pressure off of the situation. I really want to enjoy my home right now so I buy what works for this place and try not to worry about not shelling out $$$ for the top of the line.

Sit on it for a while…

I had originally purchased some lovely Jan Skacelik prints for above our dresser but realized they were a bit small for the wall and would look better above our nightstands. So I was on the hunt for some larger abstract prints in a neutral shade and found these two on Desenio which turned out to be the perfect fit. To be honest, I hadn’t planned to have them side by side and I may eventually switch out the smaller one for something less similar but for now it will act as a place holder. My advice to you is to sit on it for a while and really think about the size, color palette and imagery that works for the space. Before buying these prints, I even made a little mock up of the wall to see how different combinations would work.

Prop it up…

Our lovely old apartment comes with some perfectly imperfect plaster walls. The downside to this is that we can’t hang anything with nails so we’ve resorted to using Command Strips for every frame. But another easy fix, which looks especially nice with larger prints, is to just prop them against the wall on a shelf or piece of furniture. This makes it easier to switch things out and rearrange whenever your heart desires.

Just add foliage…

The finishing touch to any room is a bright green plant to add some color and life into the space. One thing I hardly ever hear anyone talking about is how easy it is to start new plants from cuttings. This little Monstera was started from a few stems that I saved from a larger plant (that I sadly neglected to death). After a couple months propagating it re-rooted and was ready for its new home in this minimal white pot that I picked up from The Victorian in Atlanta. If you know someone with a thriving house plant, why not ask for a clipping and start your own?

And if you’re still a green thumb in training or if weekly bouquets of fresh flowers are burning a hole in your pocket, I would definitely suggest a bunch of eucalyptus, which look beautiful and smell amazing too. If you’re in San Diego check out Native Poppy for the most gorgeous selection of fresh and dried flowers.

Add personal details…

The best way to fill up a space and make it feel warm and inviting is to add little personal details here and there. I love these aromatherapy candles that I picked up from Home Goods a while ago and which litter my bedroom and living room. I’ve also got my favorite Jo Malone perfume and jewelry stand along with a little hand-thrown bowl that was gifted to me years ago. I love the mix of glass, earthy elements and gold accents that warm up the space and create more interest for the eyes. These little objects can be found all around your home, it’s just a matter of collecting and displaying them in a thoughtful way.

Reshuffle and refresh often…

I’m really looking forward to changing out different things and moving things around every once in a while. Doing this is not only a fun creative project but it will also help give you a boost of inspiration when you’re suddenly looking at something completely different. I think this will help me love this space even more and it will just keep things more fun and interesting around the room.

So those are my tips for refreshing your room without spending a ton of money. Are there any areas of your home that you feel could use a refresh? And what tricks do you use to keep your home feeling fresh and inspiring? Let me know in the comments! Thank you so much for reading. xx Jessica
